Croydon Scrap Cars…

Croydon is an extensive town in South London. It is one of the most significant commercial sections in Greater London, with a vast shopping district and a buzzing night-time economy.

At the time of the Norman conquest, Croydon held a church, a mill, and approximately 365 occupants, as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Croydon grew throughout the Middle Ages as a market town and a hub for charcoal production, brewing and leather tanning. The Surrey Iron Railway between Croydon and Wandsworth opened in 1803 to be the world’s first public railway.

By the early 20th century, Croydon was a crucial industrial area known for car manufacture, metalworking, and Croydon Airport.

In the mid 20th century, these sectors were superseded by retail areas. The service economy was conveyed about by tremendous redevelopment, which saw the rise of office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, the biggest shopping centre in Greater London, until 2008. In 1965 Croydon was amalgamated into Greater London

As mentioned before, Croydon was the site of London’s primary airport until the Second World War. German V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets devastated the bulk of Croydon’s bustling centre during the war, and the town bore the scars of the destruction for many years after.

Heathrow Airport displaced Croydon Airport as London’s main airport following the war. It resulted in Croydon Airport quickly declining, eventually closing in 1959.
